Night Vision Buyer’s Guide

Buying night vision can feel overwhelming, Tube types, specifications, housings, mounts, and endless acronyms. This guide is designed to simplify the process and help you confidently choose the right system for your needs and budget. Whether you’re new to night vision or upgrading your current setup, we’ll walk you through what matters most so you can make an informed decision.

1.

Understanding Night Vision

There are several types of night vision housings, and tubes each designed for different use cases and budgets. Below, you’ll see the most common system categories we offer to help you understand how they differ and which may be right for you.

Monoculars

Monoculars are often referred to as the “Swiss Army knife” of the night vision world. They are widely used and are commonly the first step into night vision for many users.

Monocular systems use a single image intensifier tube, making them one of the most cost-effective ways to get into night vision. Their simple design keeps costs lower while still providing capable performance.

Monocular housings can vary in material, weight, and features depending on the model. Many are designed to accept standard accessories such as J-arms and helmet mounts, allowing them to integrate easily into common night vision setups.

These units can be used handheld or helmet mounted, offering a high level of versatility depending on the user’s setup and intended use.

Binoculars

Binoculars are another option when purchasing night vision, and there are many different housing models available.

These systems use two image intensifier tubes, which generally makes them more expensive than traditional monocular options. With both eyes under night vision, many users find they adapt more quickly compared to using a single tube monocular.

Binocular housings can vary in material, weight, and features depending on the model. Some use fixed bridge designs where both pods remain on a single plane, while others use articulating systems that allow each pod to rotate or fold independently.

Like monocular systems, binoculars can be used handheld or helmet mounted, giving users flexibility depending on their setup and intended use.

NNVT Image Tubes

We build our devices using NNVT white phosphor image intensifier tubes. We offer both MX-11769 and MX-10160 formats depending on the housing configuration.

MX-11769 tubes include a pigtail that allows for manual gain control in housings that support it, while MX-10160 tubes are designed for fixed gain systems.

All tubes we offer are white phosphor and auto-gated.

Systems built with these tubes typically range from $2,499 to $5,799 depending on the housing and configuration.

We also list available tubes in our In Stock section so you can view the actual tube photos and specifications before purchasing.

When paired with our housing options and optics package, these systems provide strong performance for the money

2.

Choosing the Right Housing

Night vision housings come in a variety of designs, materials, and feature sets. Understanding the differences between available options can help you choose a system that fits your intended use, budget, and overall setup.

Key Features

Manual Gain

Systems that support manual gain will be noted in the product title or description. These systems include a control knob that allows the user to adjust the brightness of the image intensifier tube. Manual gain allows you to increase or decrease the brightness of the image depending on the lighting conditions. In brighter environments, users will often reduce the gain.

Weight

Housing weight depends on both the features included and the material the unit is constructed from. When comparing options, it is important to look at the actual weight of the housing rather than focusing only on the material. For example, the PVS-14R is constructed from aluminum but is lighter than the traditional MIL-SPEC polymer PVS-14.

Durability

All housings offered by Night Vision Systems are backed by a lifetime housing warranty. Regardless of the material the housing is constructed from, if the physical housing becomes damaged during normal use, we will replace it. Because of this, customers do not need to base their decision solely on the housing material. Whether the unit is constructed from molded polymer or aluminum, the housing itself is covered and supported for the life of the product. This allows customers to focus on selecting the housing that best fits their preferred features, weight, and configuration.

Features

All of the housings we offer include different features depending on the model. Some are fixed bridge designs where the pods remain on a single plane, while others are articulating and allow the pods to rotate or fold independently. Some systems include manual gain, some use push button power controls, and some include onboard IR illuminators, while others do not. Because of these differences, it is important to determine which features matter most for your intended use. Speaking with our team can help ensure you select a housing that includes the features you need for your setup.
